The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new Post Graduate Diploma in Women’s & Gender Studies through the School of Gender & Development Studies (SOGDS) from July 2012 session.
This is the first of its kind, to be offered
through distance education in the country. The last date for
applications for the July 2012 session is July 15.
The addresses the need to examine gender issues
from an academic perspective through the dissemination of the growing
body of knowledge in the areas of women’s and gender studies. Admission
is open to all students with an undergraduate degree in any discipline
who may be interested in acquiring conceptual, theoretical and
analytical knowledge in the areas of women’s and gender studies, or
furthering their interests in these areas.
The one year, 34 credit comprises of four core
courses in theories & concepts, power, arts & media and gendered
bodies. The courses are intended to equip students with foundational
knowledge in the discipline to prepare them for relevant employment
opportunities later on.
Women’s & Gender studies being
inter-disciplinary areas, the focuses on developing analytical and
critical perspectives by examining given knowledge discourses across
disciplines from a gender perspective.
The school, which already offers a Master’s in
Gender & Development Studies, is launching the PG Diploma in Women’s
& Gender Studies from this year, to be followed by a Master’s
programme in Women’s & Gender Studies in the near future.
After completion of the programme, employment
opportunities can be sought in NGO’s, public sector, counseling, media,
mass communication, journalism, writing, editing, teaching, or any other
fields where a basic, conceptual understanding of gender issues is
required.
Persons already employed in various fields (NGO’s,
counseling, law, medical field, journalism, media, etc) may also be
interested in taking this program as an avenue of additional knowledge
enrichment and for betterment of career opportunities within their
respective fields.
