Prior to delving into details about e-governance and its impact on education, it is important to understand what e-governance is. It is more than just computerizing vital data and technical procedures. Broadly speaking, it is making use of ICT or Information and Communication Technologies in various governance procedures.
When we compare growth rates between India and China, India undoubtedly enjoys an edge over the other economic giant owing to the fact that India’s demography is varied and has a strong educational system. Nevertheless, the education system in India has to keep pace with the changing times and shift equilibrium depending on the need of the hour. But has India really progressed in the education sector in an optimum manner? If you ask experts, you would find very few saying yes. This is because education now means beyond the 4 walls of a classroom. India has to come out of the 4 walls, which definitely it has but slowly. In this context, e-governance can play an instrumental role in pushing educational standards in India higher and faster.
In other words, although India enjoys an edge over China, but it won’t be too long when China may supersede India if proper measures are not taken by the Indian government in taking educational standards higher. E-governance can be an important tool.
How will E-governance help education system in India?
Let us see how e-governance can help the education sector in India. There are times when our education system fumbles leading to a high rate of school dropouts, superannuated syllabi, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructural facilities. These loopholes can be addressed with e-governance. It will greatly reduce the chaotic scenario that does exist in the education system.
E-governance will help in constant monitoring of the teacher and pupil performance and will also provide the much needed feedback to the authorities of educational institutes. This will eventually help the management and the parents to bring in changes as and when deemed necessary.
E-governance will enable teachers and students to get meaningful answers to Where, Why, When, and What of any event. For instance, if a particular class is not performing well, it should be able to help the management to assess the reasons of failure and work accordingly.
Alternatively, if a particular class has done exceptionally well, what is the actual reason that resulted in an excellent performance? Once you are able to find answers to such questions, it will undoubtedly give better results than what we get today.
The concept of employing e-governance strategies in education is not new, however, the system ought to be well equipped to deal with upcoming challenges that we face with every passing day.
In other words, it should enable school and college authorities to take a decision. Every measure ought to be taken to keep the system transparent and accountable.
It would be wrong to say that India has not implemented e-governance in its system as paper votes have been done away with and replaced with beeping voting machines. But what needs to be seen is when e-governance will actually regulate the education system in India. It is not a far cry though!
