IGNOU launches new online programme on biodiversity


The Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU’s) Chair for Sustainable Development (CSD) has launched a new online Appreciation Programme on Sustainable Management of Biodiversity (APSMB) for July 2012 session. Last date to apply for this programme is June 20, 2012.

The basic objective of this programme is to promote awareness and capacity building for sustainable management of biodiversity for mainstreaming biodiversity into the daily lives of individuals, recreating and securing linkages between people and nature and taking actions in a global context.

This Appreciation programme provides an understanding of biodiversity science and will sensitise people to the issues around biodiversity; threats posed to it and will promote the conservation of biological diversity of ecosystems.


This programme also gives an insight to the indigenous traditional related knowledge base that can compliment scientific knowledge and can provide a basis to address issues of sustainable development.

Graduate in any discipline is eligible to apply for this one month online programme consisting of four blocks, namely, bio diversity and its importance, agro biodiversity, threat to biodiversity and sustainable use of biodiversity.

The programme shall be available online on the SAVE (Sustainable Action and Virtual Education) platform, i.e., www.ignouonline.ac.in/save. it is a complete virtual learning environment suite covering all the activities form registration to programme delivery.

The eminent Agricultural Scientist and father of green revolution in India, Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, is the Honorary Chair of CSD, IGNOU. The main objective of the Chair is to develop and promote education for sustainable development in India and capacity building in Sustainable Science.
