New BHU V-C to take charge today

VARANASI: Lalji Singh will take over as the 25th vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Monday (August 22).

According to varsity spokesperson, the handing over of charge will take place at 4 pm at Kochin House in V-C lodge at the university.

As per the protocol of BHU, he will be received by some selected senior officers of BHU including the rector and chief proctor at Babatpur Airport.

Then he will garland the statue of Pt Madan Mohan Malaviya, founder of BHU, and offer prayers at Vishwanath Temple on the varsity campus before assuming the charge at the V-C lodge.

Lalji Singh is an internationally renowned scientist of molecular biology and is also known as the father of DNA finger printing in India.

His work on human races, origins and genetic bases is internationally known. His publications provide a strong evidence that the Aryan and Dravidian races in India have the same genetic basis.

His other important works are in the field of conservation of wildlife, species identification for forensic applications, DNA-based molecular diagnostics, genetic affinities of Andaman islanders, Genome Foundation and its activities.

He has published over 220 research papers in internationally reputed journals. He has been conferred over 65 international and national awards. Some of the notable awards are Padmashri (2004), CSIR Bhatnagar Fellowship (2009), Meritorious Invention Award (2011) and BP Pal Memorial Award (2010).

Earlier, the outgoing v-c of BHU, D P Singh, was accorded a warm farewell at a grand function organised at Swatantrata Bhawan on Saturday.

A number of senior varsity officials including rector B D Singh and registrar K P Upadhyaya presented him the mementos on the occasion.
