VARANASI: The students of IT-BHU broke their own record of blood donation by collecting 375 units of blood on Sunday.
The students, including girls, thronged Dhanrajgiri Hostel to participate in the annual blood donation programme held under the auspices of Kashi Utkarsh (a social and voluntary organisation of IT-BHU) in collaboration with the blood bank under the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS).
The event saw the students comfortably beat the last year's record of 335 units donated on a single day.
Many students were first time blood donors at the programme.
Rohit Mittal, a first-year BTech (civil engineering) student who donated blood for the first time, said, "I want every drop of blood donated here to save precious lives. I also hope that other engineering students across the country would come forward for voluntary blood donation to help critically ill patients who are in dire need of blood."
Similarly, Divya, his batchmate, also donated blood and promised to keep doing the noble deed in the future.
"There is no better gesture to help the needy patients than donating blood, as it promises to give them a new lease of life," she said on the occasion.
To help the cause of IT-BHU students, the new mobile van, donated by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), UP, was also offering its services to the students.
The van can handle blood donation of four persons at a time. It saved a lot of time as a number of IT-BHU students had started queuing up in the hostel in the morning itself.
It may be mentioned here that Kashi Utkarsh has been organising a blood donation programme annually for the past many years.
According to Anurag, a IT-BHU student and one of the coordinators of the programme, the event has witnessed a significant rise in the number of students donating blood in the past few years.
From 209 units in 2008, the blood donation rose to 216 units in 2009.
The figure rapidly jumped to 335 units last year, also setting a record of maximum blood donation on a single day in UP in 2010, he added on the occasion.
IT-BHU director K P Singh and BHU blood bank incharge K K Gupta also encouraged the students for voluntary blood donation.
