School of open learning to go semester way

New Delhi: With the Delhi University adopting the semester based system for all courses, it is now the turn for the School of Open Learning, which also comes under Delhi University to shift from the annual mode to the semester mode for its undergraduate classes. But the move will only come next year. Currently, only postgraduate courses run in the semester system at SOL.

Dinesh Gupta, deputy director of SOL said that the semester system was not possible from this academic session, as the syllabus is not yet handed over by the university authorities to the School of Open Learning (SOL). Syllabus formation is still under process.

Generally, any change in policy made by DU takes a year's gap in application in SOL, he added.

Those who take admission in SOL this year won't be able to migrate to a regular college, if they wish to, next year. This is because regular colleges would have already adapted to the semester mode from this year.

Around 70,000 prospectuses have been sold at SOL till date and the application process will go on till August 1. Every year, around 2 lakh students take admission in various courses offered by the school. And compared to last year, this year the school is attracting many more students.

Gupta further added that, the overall number this year may be higher as more students are taking interest in Delhi University. Also, in the absence of application forms in regular colleges, students are filling up other forms.

This increase could also be attributed to the pass percentages in CBSE, Haryana and UP boards that has seen a jump from last year.

Some regional boards have also come out with Class 12 results earlier than usual and it is making it possible for students to taking admission in SOL, he added.
