AHMEDABAD: The admission of 3,200 students granted by the Gujarat University (GU) in city's topmost commerce colleges continues to be in controversy. When these students went to pay the admission fee in their respective colleges, they were told that admissions were over.
There were a number of students who were at a complete loss when they were denied admission by the colleges. And this, despite figuring in the merit list recently declared by the GU. For instance, a student who had scored 73 per cent and went to pay fee in the HL College of Commerce was aghast when the authorities told him that that they had only seven seats and the GU had sent 30 students for admission. Since they had already given admission, they could not accept his fee and grant him admission.
It needs mention that 3,200 had failed to secure admission in first year undergraduate commerce degree courses and had applied to the GU for the same. But there was pressure on the GU to grant admission only on merit basis.
The GU recently declared the merit list, but there were allegations that top university officials had succumbed to political pressure and granted admission to students who secured ten per cent less than the merit cut off of a particular college.
