NEW DELHI: The freshers in many off-campus colleges in Delhi University had a surprise visitor on Thursday. For the first time in many years, the DU vice-chancellor stepped out of the campus to meet students in colleges like Swami Shraddhanand, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Rajdhani, Shivaji, ARSD and three evening colleges.
The sudden visit of Dinesh Singh and his team of deans got principals on their toes. Seniors stopped their banter only to crane their necks through the new crowd. Freshers wondered what the excitement was all about till some of them remembered reading about the V-C in the papers.
As the delegation moved from Alipur to Pitampura and then from Raja Garden to Dhaula Kuan in a mini bus, the only difference was the infrastructure of different colleges. Otherwise, the rush of students and the excitement was just the same.
At the first stop at Swami Shraddhanand College in outer Delhi, which was relatively quiet for the first day, Singh stopped two second-year boys to ask them if they liked the college. "I had no idea he was our vice-chancellor . He asked about the facilities which I said were much better now," said Sagar Saini. The college has a new building now and all toilets are being renovated. The V-C went into classrooms , chatted with freshers, encouraged them to get into sports and welcomed suggestions through email and Facebook.
At the bustling Keshav Mahavidyalaya auditorium, he went onto the stage to address the newcomers. The team was happy that the college had already distributed timetables and also put them online.
The next stop was Shivaji College where Singh invited kabaddi players for a match with his team of deans. Both laughed off but the V-C stressed the importance of sports in education. DU is planning a scholarship for sportspersons. He also met Math students in the searing heat. "It's an encouragement for students to know that the V-C himself came to meet them on the first day. ," principal Shashi Nijhawan said.
Nearby at Rajdhani, the V-C invited students to the upcoming creative writing and music fests. Students at ARSD College were so excited that all of them gathered at one place to get pictures clicked with him.
