Presidency lodges complaint on merit list goof-up
KOLKATA: Presidency University on Thursday lodged a complaint with higher education department in connection with the leaking of the merit list on the varsity website two days ahead of its formal release.
"We have found out that the merit list was leaked while a testing was being carried out by authorities. We have sought help from the department and asked them to conduct an inquiry into the matter by IT experts. The hackers have not only leaked the merit list but also taken printouts of the result," said registrar Pradip Sengupta.
The university lists for admission, supposed to be published on Monday at 3pm, were posted on its website for half an hour on Saturday night. The authorities were clueless about how it happened. As the news spread instantly, many aspirants were glued to their computer screens to check the results.
It was around 9pm that candidates got to know that the lists of all subjects, except geology and physics, had been posted online.
"There needs to be an inquiry. One needs to find out if it has been intensionally leaked or hacked. This can be proved only after an investigation. The members of Independents' Consolidation had brought out the matter infront of people as soon as the anomaly was noticed. We sincerely hope that the culprits are found and punished," said spokesperson of IC, Joy Saha.
Kolkata Police meanwhile received a complaint regarding the 'leakage'. The cyber crime cell of the city police have initiated a probe. After initial probe, investigators have reason to believe that the 'leakage' was not intentional. Investigators said, it could have been a mistake from the end of the web designing company. But it is true that the password was either shared or leaked. "We have received a complaint and started probe," said Damayanti Sen, joint commissioner of police (crime).
