PMCH seeks creation of 100 posts of teachers

PATNA: Patna Medical College and Hospital has renewed its demand to the government for creation of posts of about a hundred teachers in its different departments and fill up about 45 vacant posts of professor, associate professor and assistant professor if it is to increase the number of MBBS seats from the present 100 to 150. Creation of these posts will help it meet the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms for a higher intake of students.

The demand was conveyed to the government about 10 days back, sources said.

In the last few years, the state government has repeatedly said that efforts were on to enhance seats in the PMCH from 100 to 150. But the move has been hanging fire for one reason or the other. The PMCH had made a request to the government to beef up the faculty in 2009 also to be able to step up the number of seats.

PMCH principal N P Yadav told TOI that in view of a large number of patients reaching the hospital from different parts of the state, expansion of medical services with adequate number of teaching faculty and doctors had become imperative. PMCH has already enhanced the number of beds due to increase in the flow of patients, he said.

According to sources, once MCI criteria is fulfilled, the PMCH would be in a position to invite the former's officials for inspection for enhancement of MBBS seats, the sources added.

Filling up of the 45 vacant posts of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, lecturer and tutor is also urgent for meeting the MCI criteria for teaching the existing strength of undergraduate and postgraduate students. MCI had already barred PG teaching in oncology in PMCH in 2008 due to absence of new-generation brachy therapy machine. Head of the department of oncology (radiotherapy), PMCH, Dr Mithilesh Kumar, has already demanded creation of one post of associate professor, one post of assistant professor and three posts of residents. He also sought filling up of one post of physicist to operate the Cobalt machine.

PMCH sources said that four posts of professors in surgery, one in physiology, one in pharmacology, one in pathology, one each in medicine and eye departments and two in anaesthesia department were lying vacant.

The posts of associate professor are lying vacant in anatomy department (3), one in physiology, one in biochemistry, two in pharmacology, two in community medicine/PSM, three in pathology, one in microbiology, one in gastroenterology, two in medicine, three in eye, one in ENT, three in plastic surgery, two in anaesthesia, one in neurosurgery, two in PMR, one in paediatrics, two in radiology, one in psychiatry and one in dentistry.

The posts of assistant professor are vacant in anatomy (one), physiology (one), community medicine (two), microbiology (one), medicine (two), eye (one), ENT (one), plastic surgery (one), neurosurgery (one), psychiatry (two) and dentistry (One), PMCH sources added.
