Admissions: Windfall for Gujarat Univ, shortfall for students?

AHMEDABAD: More than 3,500 admission forms for commerce colleges were sold in two days by the Gujarat University, till Wednesday. Over 3,100 students have already submitted their admission forms this year. There is a heavy rush for English-medium commerce colleges as scores of students who have studied at Gujarati-medium schools have also applied. The total number of seats in various commerce colleges in the city is a little above 2,500 according to university officials. Student wings like ABVP and NSUI were concerned as they estimate that close to 7,000-odd students would be left out because of the seat shortfall.

"More than 2,100 students have applied to English-medium colleges alone. Most prefer the top 10 commerce colleges in the city," says a senior university official.

Given the rush for Englishmedium colleges, the vicechancellor of the university, Parimal Trivedi, has assured that he would ask those colleges to increase seats in the 85-odd divisions.

From this year, university officials have started collecting original marksheets of students along with the photocopies. "Earlier, we used to offer provisional admissions based on photocopies," an official said. "But some students managed to submit dodgy marksheets causing embarrassment to colleges and the university. So we have started collecting original marksheets." Sources add that many colleges had already filled their quota seats anticipating the heavy rush. "Many colleges had taken students based on recommendation letters from politicians and student leaders," the official said.
