New Delhi: With the start of Delhi University undergraduate admissions, most colleges have also begun the hostel registration process for outstation students.
As the North Campus College hostels were renovated for last year's Commonwealth Games, students applying for these hostels can look forward for some well-equipped luxury rooms. The improved accommodation will however cost significantly more than last year. For instance, Hostel fee at Miranda House has also gone up to Rs 40,000 per year. And Daulat Ram College, which has probably the most 'luxurious' hostel on the campus, has increased hostel fee to Rs 66,000 per year from roughly Rs 32,000 last year.
Delhi University has almost 13 hostels for girls and boys from outside Delhi and the NCR. Those students who have confirmed their admission in a college can apply for a berth in a hostel. Shri Ram College of Commerce has 150 berths for boys and just 50 for girls, although the registration process for the girls' hostel at is yet to take off, the college is already giving out forms for the boys' hostel. The hostel forms at Sri Venkateswara College will be available with the information bulletin from June 23 to July 9. Candidates will have to submit their residence proof with the application form.
The registration process has also started at Daulat Ram College, which has an airconditioned hostel. Justifying the steep increase in the hostel fee, officials said, though the use of the AC is optional, almost all residents use it. "Even the hostel dining rooms have air-conditioning and the rooms have colour-coordinated upholstery that is expensive to maintain."
Hostel forms are already available at Hindu and Ramjas colleges. Although Hindu College has decided not to hike hostel fee, Ramjas College is yet to take a decision. "Hostels are strictly for those who have already secured admission. Forms are already available for registration, though we are still to finalise the rest of the schedule. We had waived off the hostel fee when students joined the hostel after the Commonwealth Games last October. We are likely to go back to the same fee that we charged in 2009-10," said Tanveer Aijaz, warden, Ramjas Hostel.
Usually, colleges allot hostel accommodation after the first list itself as admission is based on merit. Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House, said: After the merit list is out, we will have an interaction with the parents on July 21. We bring out another list only if the hostel berths remain vacant, which generally doesn't happen. We are mostly through with our hostel admissions after the first cutoff list itself.
