PhD Studentships and Bursaries 2011 at Kent Law School in Canterbury
Introduction : Kent Law School (KLS) invites applications for full time research studentships leading to the degree of PhD commencing in September 2011. Candidates will initially register for a full time MPhil research degree at the University of Kent at Canterbury. One of these studentships will be awarded specifically for research in the area of International Law and, although the recipient will be part of the Canterbury campus postgraduate community, the associated teaching responsibilities will take place at the University’s Medway campus. The funding will be available for one year in the first instance, extended (for registered students only) for a second year providing verifiable progress has been made (in teaching and research), and extended for a third year providing the candidate has upgraded from MPhil to PhD.
The successful applicants for the studentships will receive a maintenance grant equivalent to that offered by ESRC (£13,590 in 2010/11) and tuition fees paid at the home/EU rate (£3,950 in 2010/2011). Those awarded a studentship will normally be expected to teach a maximum of four hours per week in term time on an undergraduate English law module, at the direction of the Head of Department.
Facilities for Research Students : At present KLS has 50 postgraduate research students, comprising a lively and integrated postgraduate research community. Those appointed to research studentships are provided with shared computing facilities (IBM compatible personal computers using Word 2007), and shared office facilities. There is substantial annual funding available, within determined limits, for PhD students, including those without studentships, to attend conferences and present their research. The community of postgraduate students are provided with a common room and a facilitator to help them present, explore and develop their research ideas within a supportive community of their peers. There is also a compulsory research methods module that all students must attend together with an anchor workshop offered by the Graduate School as part of their Transferable Skills Programme. Many students also participate in regular reading groups.
How to Apply : Applicants should normally have obtained, or be about to obtain an undergraduate degree in Law of at least Upper Second Class Honours level (2:1 or equivalent from other countries), or a postgraduate degree in Law. The application procedure is conducted through an online process. Along with their application, candidates should supply a research proposal of no more than 1000 words, as well as a sample of their written work (not exceeding 5,000 words).
