.Course on community service in city college
GUWAHATI, May 4 – One of the premier institutes paving the way for higher education of young girls of the State, Handique Girls’ College located in a serene surrounding is all set to empower its students to face the challenges of a new world.
This college established in the year 1939 by a young lady with a vision Raja Bala Das, has chalked out a massive plan not only to provide quality education to its students but also to inculcate in them a sense of responsibility towards the society.
From the current session, the college will introduce a certificate course on community service. It may be mentioned here that the college already has a village development programme going on at Chapaidang under Panikhaiti Gaon Panchayat, Chandrapur block. At the initiative of the college, a library has been set up in the village, students of the college visit the village and listen to the problems and aspirations of the rural people.
Principal of the college Dr Indira Bardoloi while talking to The Assam Tribune said that apart from education, it was essential to make the young girls aware about their social responsibility. “To prepare our students to face the challenges of a fast changing world, we are concentrating on introducing relevant courses for the students that are more employment-oriented,” said Dr Bardoloi.
BCA and PGDCA have already been introduced in the college and also a syllabus for a new subject micro-biology is under preparation. Dr Bardoloi informed that the syllabus is almost ready and would be submitted to the Gauhati University for approval very soon.
“We are also focusing on empowering each student to understand their strength as a woman,” she said, referring to the certificate course on Women’s Studies conducted by the Women’s Study Cell of the college. “The aim of this course is to make the students aware about their problems and issues.”
Starting with just two students, the college today has about 2700 students. Making a beginning with six departments, it at present has 18 departments, a full-fledged central library complete with 40,000 books. It has also been showing a rising performance graph in the field of academic excellence over the last few years.
The college has some problems too, like space constraint. Dr Bardoloi said the students were deprived of a much needed auditorium. It has UGC conferred CPE (Colleges with Potential for Excellence) status for which Rs 60 lakh has been sanctioned. UGC has released Rs 30 lakh so far. ASSAM TRIBUNE
