Andhra University scientist faces probe for sexual harassment

VISAKHAPATNAM: The eight-decade-old Andhra University was embroiled in another controversy when a young scientist was found to have been seeking sexual favours from a girl student. Though the victim had complained about the harassment to the AU authorities a month ago, it came to light on Thursday evening only after the varsity ordered a probe.

The accused scientist, Veera Narayana, tried to end his life in his room after his deviant act came to light but was overpowered by other colleagues.

Narayana, who hails from Tenali in Guntur district, was assigned to teach students for his five-year integrated scientist programme in the geology department. He misbehaved with a second year student some time back and soon started asking sexual favours. When the girl threatened him that she would complain against him, he proposed to marry her.

The harassed girl could not bear the torture and finally reported the matter to the department head, AU rector and science college principal. A three-member committee comprising professors Nageswara Rao, Hemalatha and N Venkateswarlu was appointed to look into the charges.

Andhra University Science College principal Prof V Veeraiah confirmed the allegations against the scientist. "The university management has ordered an inquiry into the sexual harassment charges. The inquiry committee would submit a report in a week," he said.

It may be recalled AU Arts College principal Prof Balla Appa Rao was also involved in a sex scandal when he reportedly harassed a research scholar two months ago for clearing her Ph D dissertation .
